York Maine Coastal Workshop

October is an excellent time of the year to be experiencing the glories of Coastal Maine and exploring a couple of the most historic towns – The Yorks and Portsmouth.

We will be staying at the Cutty Sark Motel. The hotel, named after the last of the extreme clipper ships built for the 19thCentury China/England sea trade, has been a family-run business since 1975. Steeped in history, this three-floor building offers a stunning ocean view from all of its rooms.

Central to exploring “The Yorks” and Portsmouth, the Cutty Sark’s close proximity to the Nubble Lighthouse allows us to photograph the lighthouse both at sundown and sunrise easily.

“The Yorks” is defined as four distinct villages that compose this harbor town with a history dating back to 1624: York Village, York Harbor, York Beach, and Cape Neddick.

Portsmouth sits near the mouth of the Piscataqua River, a short, wide river that divides New Hampshire and Maine. Settled in 1623, it claimed to be the nation’s third-oldest city and served as a focal point on the Eastern seaboard until the late 1800s.

Notes:

  • All locations are accessible within a short walking distance.
  • Sturdy hiking shoes recommended on rocky shorelines and dirt roads.
  • Parking at shooting locations are not restricted.

Gear Consideration

We will often be making images near marine environments, i.e.: sandy beaches and salty oceans.  On this trip, over prepare for blowing or brushing sand off your equipment, then following up with cleaning with a solution and clean micro fiber cloths.  You may want to consider bringing packaged wipes. Tripod legs and feet will get sandy & wet, and should be cleaned with water and towels back at hotel.

It will be getting darker during October. Sunrise is at 7:00 am and Sunset at 6:00 pm. I try to keep visible during these hours and wear a safety vest.

We are planning for some astrophotography. You will want a wide angle lens, some people think a prime lens is best, you’ll want something from 14 to 24mm. The faster the glass the better for night photography, i.e.: 24mm f/1.8.  TRIPODS ARE HIGHLY recommended, especially for long exposures and night shots.
