Berkshire Spring Greenfields

As I aligned this landscape image, I guessed that the overcast weather would not break anytime soon. Therefore my thoughts were on testing out a new neutral density filter (hard edge).

Serendipitously, the setting sun on my right punched through a break in the clouds. Lady light then danced between the shadows for a few fleeting moments illuminating the Berkshire spring greenfield.

The gear used was my basic landscape setup, Nikon D4s, 16-35mm lens, RRS tripod, and Swiss-Arca cube ball head.

ProGrey .09 GND HARD Review

7/11/21 Note: This Supplier is no longer in Business. Recommend NISI Filters.

I experimented with a Progrey GND 0.9 Hard 100mm filter compared to a LEE .09 GND soft edge filter. The jury is still out on the Progrey because the sky was full of really dark skies. The .09 filter (3 stops) unrealistically darkened them almost black. The filters are not graduated like the Lee filters. They are almost a solid .09 hard edge filter. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of graduated performance.

I decided to purchase the Progrey because of some good reviews that I have read. Also, the price is only $92.50 (w/ship) compared to $115 for a Lee filter. The Progrey is a resin filter, and special coatings are supposed to make it less prone to scratches. I noticed about the Progrey filter because it was about 1/2 the thickness of a Lee Filter. That made me wonder if it would warp (potato chip) quickly in the sunlight. However, it did fit perfectly in the LEE filter holder. At this time, because I have not done enough field testing, I do not recommend buying this filter.

The final image was made with the LEE .09 Soft edge GND. The jury has always decided that these are the best in the business. They consistently do the job that a GND is needed for.

Western Berkshires

This location at the foothills of the western end of the Berkshire is a favorite.  A few years ago, I scouted the location and took a series of panos.  I was new to making pano’s, so the images did not come out well.  However, I fell in love with the location and its expansiveness. It was a joy to make an image of lady light dancing in the springtime between the shadows on this carpet of green. Another Berkshire Image; Berkshire Shade

After reviewing my images from the last several months, I decided to add a stopping point in my workflow for evaluating light and brightness. It seemed to me it was an area that needed particular individual focus and attention in post-processing.
