Glass Lake Wintery Mix

Without a significant warning, a Glass Lake Wintery Mix descended upon this small lake in upstate, NY and unloaded five inches of ice, snow and everything in between.  My response? Grab the Nikon D5 and start testing the new 70-200 f/2.8e by making a three image panorama….Weather can be a great inspiration as well as some new gear !!

I waited to nine o’clock hoping that the sun would peak thru the gray skies and provide some warmth and contrast to the scenery.  That did not pan out, so before the winds came thru to knock off the pine tree bows of their snow, I grabbed my D5 and attached the new 70-200 lens.  It seemed like a good moment to test it out this lens before my two week trial period is over.

My attention focused to the far end of the lake where there is an undeveloped plot of land and made my shots with the lens wide open at f/2.8 and a focal length set at 200mm. I made three handheld images with the intent of processing them as a panorama in Adobe Camera Raw.

The VR on this lens is impressive, it was completely silent and stabilized my handholding with the lens racked out to 200mm. I would rate VR a significant improvement over the G-series 70-200mm.

Luckily for me, this small lake is right on my doorsteps so there is no travel journey driving on icy highways.  However, conditions need to be inspirational to tramp thru snow, cold and ice to get to the edge of the lake.

At the point of capture,  images were intentionally shot for making this panorama.  It is not well known that if you bring a set of images into Adobe Camera Raw that the application has a built-in panorama compiler and it performs sensationally.   As a matter of fact, it has been able to compile complex 12 image pano’s more proficiently than within Photoshop or with my premium 3rd party apps.

After the panorama was generated, my workflow continued to tone the image and then convert to Black and White using McPhun Luminar.
